Why “Free Marketing” is NOT Actually Free Episode Summary:
Welcome to another episode of the Marketing Personalities Podcast! I’m Brit Kolo and I’m here solocast style to get real about why “free marketing” is not actually free! This is a common misconception and from my perspective, it’s killing marketing strategies.
So here’s where this is coming from.
I see these posts on Pinterest all the time about “52 free marketing ideas!” and “10 top ways to marketing your business for free!”
And then I hear conversations between business owners where someone is struggling with how to market their new offering and someone else in the group, without fail, throws out an idea of how to market the offering on social media – Facebook, Instagram, take your pick. And then placates the suggestion with, “I mean, social media is free! You might as well try it! What do you have to lose?!”
My answer to that question… what do you have to lose when trying out “free marketing” tactics?
TIME!
You have to lose TIME.
Because free marketing is not actually free.
You might not be exchanging dollars for exposure, but any marketing tactics WILL require time from you and/or your team. And dear entrepreneur, hear me when I say – your time is JUST as valuable as your money.
So instead of deciding on what marketing tactic to try next based on whether it’s “free” or not, know that you will absolutely have to invest TIME into this marketing tactic and seriously consider if the time you’re investing will produce a positive ROI.
How do you know what marketing tactic might give you the best ROI of time? Use the marketing tactics that feel best for you to implement already.
Because when you feel good, your audience feels good.

See, I’m not advocating for paid marketing tactics here. Whether you exchange dollars for exposure or not, this isn’t about the money.
This is about intentionally investing your time into a marketing strategy that feels good for you to implement and letting go of all the rest.
That’s what will move the needle and produce a positive ROI for you. I’m watching that be true across the board every day with my Marketing Personalities customers who are dedicated to putting their Marketing Personality Type into play within their marketing strategy.
So the next time someone throws out an idea for marketing and justifies it with, “Hey, it’s free! Might as well give it a shot!”
Remember – “free marketing” isn’t actually free. Choose to invest your TIME wisely by implementing your best marketing strategy based on your Marketing Personality Type.
