An Easy Way to Approach SEO Episode Summary:

Welcome to another episode of the Marketing Personalities Podcast! I’m Brit Kolo and I’m here today with Meg Casebolt, who’s the founder of Megabolt Digital and Brit’s go-to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Google AdWords expert.

Meg and I are here today to discuss Search Engine Optimization – SEO*! It’s what Meg is an expert in and we’re here to demystify the whole dang thing for everyone. Some personality types will love SEO, some will want to poke their eyes out at just the thought, and we’ll of course get into what side of the fence your type falls on, as well as how to approach SEO in a easeful way. No poking eyes out required.

But first, let’s get to know Meg.

Meg started her entrepreneurial ventures as a web designer but soon found out that a beautiful website would only go so far if not supported by solid Search Engine Optimization (SEO). So she dove into learning everything she could about SEO, began implementing it with her web design clients, and eventually pivoted her entire business to specializing in SEO and Google Adwords services.

Surprisingly, though, Meg’s Myers-Briggs personality type isn’t actually aligned with using SEO in her best marketing strategy!

What the what?!

That’s right. Meg is super savvy at SEO, but she doesn’t utilize it as a main marketing strategy in her own business simply because it doesn’t align with her personality type.

She’s an ESFJ – also known as a Consul. Basically, she’s a naturally-born cheerleader of all humans and an instant friend the moment you meet her. She’s extremely social and friendly, so she’s built her business primarily on relationships and referrals.

So how do we reconcile the fact that she serves her clients with SEO strategy but doesn’t use it primarily in her own business?

This happens all the time! You can become extremely skilled in one specific type of marketing tactic but not necessarily want to use it in your own business. That’s okay!

I often find Public Relations experts in this pickle. They’re super skilled at getting their clients booked for events and speaking and podcast interviews, but in the back end of their own business, they’d rather grow in a different way – in a way that’s better aligned with their own personality type.

That’s exactly what’s going on within Meg’s business.

Now, as we focus in on Meg’s expertise in SEO, Meg and I got to talk about her unique approach to SEO, who usually feels great with leveraging SEO, who doesn’t, and where any of us can simply get started with SEO if we want to.

First, Meg approaches SEO in a way different from most of her competitors. Rather than aim to get allllllll the clicks in the world for something general like “coffee”, Meg focuses her clients on getting found for something fairly niched like “best pour-over coffee in Boise, Idaho.” This approach is advantageous for most businesses, especially in the small business space because we’re not trying to appeal to everyone under the sun like maybe, Coca-Cola would be doing. We’re trying to get clicks from a certain, specific audience, ready and willing to buy or at least hear what we, as a small business, have to say.

Now, for who feels great about leveraging SEO.

I recognize that both Observant types (S as the 2nd letter) and Thinking types (T as the 3rd letter) tend to feel good about leveraging SEO, a typically technical tactic.

Those who are most aligned with SEO include ISTJs and ISTPs. I also see INTJs and INTPs latching onto SEO pretty readily.

Meanwhile, the more Intuitive types (N as the 2nd letter) and Feeler types (F as the 3rd letter) are a bit more averse to SEO because it can often feel very impersonal and emotionless.

Regardless of your type, if you’re finding our conversation about SEO as interesting and something you’d like to try out, Meg offers a free SEO Starter Kit right here at http://megaboltdigital.com/kit.

That’s a great place to start, ESPECIALLY if you’d like to utilize SEO in a more human-centered way. A perfect blend that I think Meg does a brilliant job with.

Meg also has a ton of free resources right here for you* so it’s again, super easy to get started.
